Overcoming My Language Barrier by Elena Gonzalez
Sometimes being from a different country is hard. Learning another language can be hard but you just have to try your best to learn it and never give up. Now, I am able to communicate with other people in two languages, English and Spanish. It is a great advantage in this country where the most spoken languages are both English and Spanish.
My name is Elena Gonzalez, and I came from to the United States when I started school, I did not know English; therefore I had trouble communicating with my teachers and my peers. They didn’t understand me; it was frustrating. It took me about three years to learn English and develop enough language skills to socialize and do my work without help in school.
One of my first moments was my first day of school. It was hard. I did not know anyone, and the fact that I could not communicate my feelings or ask for help stressed me and made me cry. I struggled day after day to learn English. Nevertheless, I had support of the ESL program. They offered tutoring and took care of most of my academic needs. I finished elementary, and then I went to middle school. It was a long journey, but I was a strong person. I learned how to depend on myself and do well in my classes. I met new friends and understood that I was not the only one going through that difficult situation. Others had either the same experienced or had more problems than I did, so we felt empathy to each other.
I have always known that I want to be someone in life. I set my high school goals and i was felt happy knowing that i now know two languages.
